i ripped a hole in my down vest and instead of repairing it i think that i'll keep the down and try to make something for hammock/hiking....any ideas?

See if the Jacks have anymore of their 'almost done' hoods. They had a batch that had a green liner instead of black so they're selling them as defects. Nothing wrong, well other than the color, with them. You just have to stuff and do a tiny bit of seam work. $20 for a toasty noggin is a bargain in my book.

I don't wear it hiking. In fact, I doubt anybody will ever actually see me in it! However, there is nothing that has as big of an impact on your body warmth when sleeping as having your head and neck insulated. I'll still be carrying my balaclava to wear under my hat in public when it's cold. But when it's just me and my baby (my BB; Genuine Draft is under the next tarp over ) I'll slip that hood on and smile.

I vote hood too. I got the JRB Hood and it's great for sleeping in when temps are subfreezing.

A small pillow, one that fits along the back of your neck. Just big enough to give you a little cush.
