    Hanging in Pine Trees

Could you please give me some techniques for hanging in pines? Anything you do to avoid the pitch? Minimalize the goo getting on straps, etc? Or - a way to remove it?

Lots of pine trees around, and although I know hardwoods are better - I might be in an unavoidable position of using pines, just want to keep the gear clean - if possible!

As always, thanks for the assist!

I prefer long needle pines and stay away from soft skin trees.
To remove pitch from straps I like peanut butter then dawn detergent.

For stuff falling on you not much you can do about it but for the sap around your straps from the trunk , I would imagine a couple small pieces of scrap nylon from your build would do the trick to keep sap from the trunk off your actual straps.

Goo Gone is a very cool product.

It takes the pitch off as easy as simply wiping it off. I am more than a little leery of any impact it may have to my webbing straps, but I've been using it for a couple of years now and haven't seen any wear on my straps beyond the norm.

Dang near impossible to avoid Pines out here, which makes Aspen groves a beautiful thing to see coming around a ridge.

OutandBack - We have a lot of Red and White pine - softer bark, I think (it's not big and gnarly like your photo). Are your toggles made out of arrow shafts? They look a little larger.
Good idea on the scrap nylon for a buffer.
Peanut Butter and Dawn...how did you come up with that?
Hanging in Aspens in the Fall - now there's a beautiful image!

    Thanks!

Toggles are REI tent pole repair piece cut into two pieces.
Just something I had laying around that worked. Not the lightest but they won't bend if the whoopies should slip down on the toggle.

    Hanging in Pine Trees

Just keep your tree straps in a different bag. A tough freezer bag works great.

If a tree is particularly sappy I'll take some finger diameter sticks and put them under & perpendicular to the strap to hold them off the tree.
    Good luck,

Thanks for all the ideas. We are camping this weekend and all that is around is pine trees.

Shug taught me to boil my sap soiled strap in water; dip in portion of strap covered in sap. Take the strap out, just a bit after the boil and rinse. It works real well.
