question about aluminum toggle shaft selection

    Hey everyone,

I am heading to a sporting goods store to get an extra PFD for my son and thought I may pick up a couple arrow shafts. Does anyone know if it matters what tubing diameter/thickness to use? I know the knot is suppose to hold the weight of the hammock. Just thought I would ask before I made a boo boo.

I have tried the arrow shafts and in my opinion they are to small. It's not a huge deal but I had problems keeping my whoopies on the knot. I went to a local hardware store and found some larger diameter aluminium tube for cheap and cut some toggles and it works great!I think it's 1/2" O.D.

I've used them in the past but when one of my hiking poles broke I decided to use the bigger diameter for easier knot tying and they are not as easy to lose.

question about aluminum toggle shaft selection

You can cut pieces off a knitting needle.
Select the size you feel comfortable with.
    olddog taught me that trick.

+1 on the free stuff. I have graphite ones from Gander Mountain. Just go to anywhere that does archery and see if they have something in the garbage.

I didn't even think about scrap pieces. I didn't see any at Basspro to buy individually so I didn't buy any. I hated to drop $40+ on a half dozen arrows considering one of them would probably last me quite a while.

I will try to drop by the archery shop over the next couple of weeks. That's a great idea.

I use the scraps from then ends of golf club shafts. They work great and you can get ones that slip inside each other by using different portions of the shaft or one from an iron and one from a wood. You can often find broken shafts at the driving range, or ask a club maker for his trimmings.

I say find something that is free. No need to spend money on it unless you want them to look fancy. All they need to be is strong enough to resist compression. You probably have stuff in your house that would make fine toggles. Stuff I had lying around that Ihave used in the past: old arrow shafts, tent repair sleeves, half inch wooden dowel, three eighth inch PVC tubing, copper pipe, three inch long bolts, aluminum tent stakes...I could go on but you get the picture.

Re: question about aluminum toggle shaft selection

If you know someone who shoots... Ask them, most of them have a bent arrow or two laying around... I got 4-3" sections and 2-4" out of one "well bent" arrow shaft... I have given them away and kept one pair everyone seems to love them so far...
