Newbie needs idea for hammock straps.

So I got el cheap grand trunk ultralight to test the waters. It only came with s hooks on a couple inches of rope on each end of the hammock.

I have 2 ratcheting straps with hooks. I was jut going to use the log end without te mechanical ratchet.
My idea was to just loop it around a tree and hook it on itself. Then make a couple f loops to get a good height to connect the s hooks too.

    Does this sound safe?

Thumbs up Ratchet strap set up

Worked for my son's troop's scoutmaster until I set him up with whoopieslings and polyester camo webbing and Dutch clips.

Lots of people use ratchet straps as tree straps. What you want to do sounds fine. Adjustment is more involved but no biggie for the time being.

Do you know if they are nylon? Nylon stretches which is not too bad for short periods or if you set up higher to compensate for the stretch. Down the road if you are going to use them for a whole night, polyester straps are very low stretch and keeps your set up consistent more specifically your butt won't end up touching the ground by morning.

Just watch the hooks. Once you have weight applied they stay put pretty well. If you get up to answer the call of nature the weight of that big steel hook can make it slide down the strap and disconnect. Then you come back and plop down in your hammock and end up on the ground. If the loop is big enough, just chop off the hook with a hacksaw and leave all that steel at home.

Newbie needs idea for hammock straps.

Yea it is a stitched loop around a sealed hook so I would have to hack the hook off as then I could just look the non hook end through the stitched loop. It's short term so I didn't want to destroy the strap knowing ill replace it in a month or so. This is all trial run.

So I guess after I loop t around a tree I should make multiple loops a few inches apart to customize where i can connect the s hooks from the hammock?

You could tie the straps to the loop of rope the hammock hooks are connected to with a slipped sheet bend. It'll save tying knots in the straps and will allow you easier adjustment.

If the straps are in the 1-1.5 in range you could probably put some rings on your hammock for the buckle method. My first hammock had S hooks that I put over the rings. Or you could larkshead the rings directly on the hammock if the rope is a small enough diameter. SMC rings work well. Quite a few people have also used rings from slingrings.com. I'll probably be ordering some from them soon.

So this is what I have.

The black strap/hook is about 10ft worth. Then the hammock is bunched up with that S-hook connect to the hammock rope. Am I supposed to untie that rope and make it longer or is it ok as stubby as it is?

I would typically just wrap the strap around a tree and hook it onto itself then do a larks head around a bed sheet and that was my hammock. I would sometimes have to redo the larks head around the sheet ends to get the right height/sag but I never had problems.

Now that I have a REAL hammock I'm a little confused haha!

    Sorry and thanks! :/

I would undo larkshead on the silver S hook, get rid of the S hook and do the slipped sheet bend like in the video only the black webbing would be the black rope in your case.
