Yall are making me homesick. Born in Macon, lived north of Atlanta '83 - '93. My parents had a condo in Helen overlooking the Chatahoochee. Drove throught the area last summer on the way to Boy Scout camp with my son.
To Boldly Hang Where No One Has Hung Before...
All I can say is WOW! After moderate 6.5 mi. hike with the troop, finding a camp site(couldn't find the official one as there are either limited or no markings in Dupois State Park trail system in FL) and setting up within a minute-watching the rest of the group still putting the polls in the tent sleves
I made the mistake of volunteering to fetch water at the end of trail from the car stash about 1.2mi away with Hogs on the right and Gaters on the left. Out of shape as I am doing the extra 2.4 Mi. and returning with 5 gal on my back was a killer on the feet. Much to our surprise, they parked the car at the wrong trail head a mile up the dirt road. Thankfully one youngster could drive, so we sent him up to fetch the car. My dogs were barking mad when we finally got back to camp, so was nice to get into hammock and raise them a bit.
Lots of wild life here-scorpion took a liking to my son's home made cat food stove and its warmth, though bugged him out as it was an inch from his foot! Took dinner early and hammock next and am Enjoying the stars, brisk air, often catching myself letting out a snore here and there, listening to the kids look for, then find big hogs in the scrub and running away screaming like little girls in the middle of the night as I dozed off. Poor kid next to me in his tree rope stand shelter said I snored all night. He initially made his shelter in some brush/scrub palms and found out that it was later occupied by a wild hog
Waking up with absolutely NO back pain. I have very bad back and neck issues which has kept me from enjoying camping. What a relief swinging in the wind. Temp got to 40ish and with my 40 degree bag I am using as a quilt, I was perfectly comfortable with 3/8 Volara under pad. Nice combo in all, and I did not feel a bit guilty having the lightest pack there except for the kid who just brought his sleeping bag.
Next trip, remind parents canned food is heavy for the kiddies and not appropriate for packing-Ramin noodles are not going to starve Johny in 1 night, and bring more than 1L of water where non is available for 24hr!
And lastly, Karl my son wants his own BB soon!
i get mine Wednesday!!!! are these days going slower or is it me just being too dang excited!
