It's the alcohol. It kills the bacteria and enzymes that cause the odors. Also the reason it's so quick drying.

EDIT: I attend the St Louis Renaissance Faire each year and the vodka/water mix is used heavily by those on cast who can only spot clean their garb each night due to the fabric or elaborate needle and bead work. It's a proven method of cleaning and removing odors.

Enjoy the smell of the smoke, especially in the middle of winter.
If you really can't handle it though, is use woolite over vodka, vodka is MUCH more expensive on this side of the border!

    I can see it now:

Park Ranger - "Sir alcoholic beverages are not permitted in this part of the park."

Park Patron - "With all due respect, that is not a beverage; it is my odor removing spray."
    "We're the Sultans of Swing."

So I wonder if the vodka trick will help with the stench synthetic performance athletic wear develops and can't seem to ever wash out?

Just pick up a cheap bottle of vodka, mix and spray!
Vodka could damage the fabric of your gear. Sometime it is not immediately noticeable that fibres have been damages. At some point in time you have a failure.

I wash my stuff with a tiny bit of mild soap, then hang it out to dry, a little breeze and the odor is gone.

Just for the sake of new folks, poision oak and ivy, have an oil in them that does travel on smoke. So if you are allergic to Poision Oak or Ivy, be warned that you could have a reaction if your hammock or other gear has been smoked by a fire burning either the oak or ivy of the itchy type.

You could just send all smoke-infused gear to me and replace it with new gear -- problem solved

Re: How Do I get Rid of the Smoke Smell?

I, too, was surprised at how strong some of my gear smelled of smoke. When I get home, I air out my gear and wipe down my tarp with a wet cloth. Clothes that can't be washed, like down jackets and knit Beanies, I spray with an mild fabric refresher and hang to dry. The scent disappears fairly well.

A little bit of Dawn dish soap with a 5 gallon bucket and a clothes line is all I have ever used since 1986 to clean my camping gear. It hasn't failed me yet and I have stuff that my son is now using for camping.

I just throw my hammock in the washer with a mild detergent and no softener. Make sure you remove your suspension lines first.
Life looks better from a BIAS hammock.
