Just pick up a cheap bottle of vodka, mix and spray!
Better yet if you drink all the Vodka you wont care what your gear smells like

    smoke

Stay out of the smoke use a chimney.

It is easy to put a little campfire in a tin can stove with a chimney.

If vodka works because it kills bacteria then you could (more cheaply) use rubbing alcohol. Do dilute it with water though because alcohol/water mixture is more effective against germs than just alcohol.

Having said all of that I find that just hanging stuff up outside gets the smoke smell out.

After the Winter NEHHA hang, I ended up heading directly into the ER in the hospital in Boston (minor issue). Of course, after the great firepit we had going, I reeked of woodsmoke! The first doc in the room asked me, "Were you in a fire?" I told him no, and where I was ...

"You were doing what?" "In this cold?" "In a HAMMOCK!?!?!?"

Hehehehe ..... I still like the smoke.

Wood smoke is very difficult to clean from clothing. It doesn't bother me though. I don't wash my camping gear (hammock, quilts, pack, etc.). I use it outside so it's really not an issue and I only wear my hiking clothing when on the trail and never around town. The clothing still has campfire smell even after going through the washer.

I find both ethanol and dilute vinegar to be helpful in dispelling unwanted odors. We could get into the chemistry of why I think it works but just thinking about it is putting me to sleep.

Like many others, I enjoy the campfire leaves behind but a scoop of oxy clean in a 5 gallon bucket of cold water does wonders, for both smell and stains. Swish the fabric around in it and let it stand for 24 hours, remove, rinse and air dry for another day or two. Take a chug or two from the vodka bottle if you tols the Mrs. you were using it for the smell if you are feeling like taking a risk...
Happy Trails to one and all.
