I agree with Slo. I Just spent 4 rainy, windy nights on the AT with down UQ/TQ. My standard cuben hex tarp w/ 11' ridge line and doors from Hammock Gear kept everything dry. I just made sure I hung the hammock high as I could and the tarp right above the hammock ridge line.

FWIW - I can say I was quite happy to be using synthetics several times. I have and use both.

FWIW be very careful with professional down cleaning. Many places will tell you they can clean your down but the solvents used will strip the natural oil out shortening the life of the down.
    YMMV

    Synthetics for AT?

I also have both. To me it depends on several things... But this is what it comes down to for me. The weight advantage of down is pretty much a wash for a 40 degree quilt and above (apex). So they make a great choice for summer hiking b/c of the added security against moisture- rain, humidity, rivers and sweating. I use down for winter and syn for summer. My 40deg UQ is 14.xx oz and my 50deg TQ is 11.xx oz. both are syn and I got them from enlightened equipment, which I highly recommend.
