I would like to premise this question by saying that eventhough I spend entirely too much time on this site... I have not even scratched the surface... so if this has been asked and answered I appologize.
Has anyone used kite material to build a hammock? I found the kitebuilder site that has 1.5 oz ripstop in every imaginable color and wondered if it was usuable for a more "lofty" purpose than kiting.
well, WB and others offer 1.1 ripstop hammocks in single layer. 1.5 should be just fine.
Those kite makers have all kinds of interesting fabrics. I have played around a little with some of them. I was gifted a box of "scrap". So I do not know what each of the fabrics really are.
Ripstop is ripstop unless it states it's coated in some way. Any kite suppliers I've seen were fairly high in price from what I recall though.
If it's colors you want try fabricsupplier on ebay. I've had good luck with them.
Otherwise our own vendors have very good deals on more "woodsy" colors.

I used to make kites competitively. Most of the fabric used is coated to help prevent unwanted airflow. It is very loud and crinkly and not very soft. I have a box full of scrap sailmakers fabric which I have used for kites still. Not sure if it is waterproof for tarps but I think it would work for a UQ protector.

Kite suppliers offer all sorts of interesting and specialize do-dads and such, I found they carry a good assortment of carbon fiber rods that would be good for tarp pole mods. Definitely good DIY grounds.

Most of the kite makers Ive seen are using/ selling SPINN which would NOT be good for hammock.
