    Thermadrape: Vapor Barrier Awesomeness.

At this years Mt. Rogers hang out I was introduced to a new material to use as a vapor barrier. FishinFinn had an under quilt made from a thing called a Thermadrape. What's a Thermadrape (TD) you ask?A TD is a blanket made from Mylar (space blanet) with a soft backing. According to the PDF I found it's constructed from:

Cellulose and Cotton--enhances patient comfort and reduces the cooling effects of evaporation caused by perspiration.
Low Density Polyethylene--acts as a water-repellent layer to fluids.
Aluminum--retains heat; applied in droplet form which stops conduction.
The TD has almost none of the plastic-bag-like crinkle that you normally get from a space blanket or plastic sheeting vapor barriers. It is light weight (7.6oz for an unmodified TD), compacts down to a small size, and seems to be much sturdier than space blanket I've come across. Could this be the ultimate in vapor barriers?

FishinFinn had made an under quilt/vapor barrier that he used at Mt Rogers. He assumed that it added another 15-20* of warmth to his hammock setup. He will have to provide details on the quilt

Here's a shot of the package.

Here's a shot of an unmodified TD, a shot of the front and backside of the material, and a closeup of the material.

I am really excited about he potential of this material. FishinFinn sent me my TD so I have no idea where to buy them. I would assume that you could get them from a medical supply store.

My TD also included this ultra-cool head cover. I plan on making it into some sort of pot cozy or perhaps I will use it to make fake UFO videos by filming it sailing through the air

I will just add that attroll has been testing mine recently as a stand-alone UQ, and should pipe in here as to it's properties, usability, etc., with maybe a pic? Mine is a little heavy, due to the wool suiting middle layer. I could have used a much lighter middle layer, like silk or ????(use your imagination.)

I really like this as a UQ on its own, or as a cold weather UQ booster. Its VB properties is one of the best things about it. Back it with 1.1 sil or untreated, and you have a pretty lightweight, reusable, sturdy, packable, stuffable UQ.

As the unmodified version is only 7.4 oz (is that with or without the headgear?), you should be able to make a pretty lightweight UQ, especially for 3+ season use. And, they only cost $10 at my source.

So, HC4U has busted the super-secret Thermadrape UQ club. At least we still have our secret handshake.

And I thought it would be cool to take several of the headgears, and make hammock sleep socks.

How low would you think this stuff could go as a standalone UQ?

You beat me to it! Just turn them inside out and slip them on your tootsies at night.

    Pretty impressive claims:

    Type of Body Heat Conserved
Convective Heat Loss--Heat loss to air currents (25% of loss)
Radiant Heat Loss--Heat loss in the form of electromagnetic energy from the body to colder objects in the room (65% of loss)

Of course, that's in a hospital setting... with larger temperature differences, there will be larger losses.

Looks like they use it backwards to what we want:

Yes, cotton and cellulose... on a synthetic substrate. You would have to keep it dry.
