Scout - Sea Base in Florida

My son is going to Sea Base in Florida in a few months. He wants to take his hammock to hang on the ship.

Does anyone have experience with this? Do you know if the ship captains allow the Scouts to hang their hammocks on the ships? He wouldn't take his tarp or bug net, but would probably take his ground mat.

If I understand correctly, they will not get assigned to a ship until they arrive at the beginning of their trek, so we can't reach out and ask the captain ahead of time.

I would appreciate any help you have to offer. Would appreciate any Sea Base related help that you would want to offer.

    THANKS!!!

The Out Island and Keys packing video on their website includes a hammock. Have they provided him with a packing list?

Scout - Sea Base in Florida

Edited: I deleted my response when I just realized this was not a military “base.”

He is doing the Coral Reef Sailing adventure. They have provided a packing list, but they were told to bring ground mats. He tends to pack more then he should so if he won't be able to use his hammock I don't want him to take it with. Hammocks were not on the packing list. I was just wondering if it is a common thing to use a hammock on the ship. Or if there is any where to even hang it.

Scout - Sea Base in Florida

I copied this from a blog of someone who did the sailing adventure

Do not bring Eno (or other brand) hammocks. There is nowhere to hang a hammock on a sailboat, period. OK, there may be one exception: our 1st Mate hung his from the ship’s main beam and the anchor hook. In other words, he was basically under the boat, about two feet off the water, swinging like a sack of potatoes all night. Forget your Eno. You won’t use it.

And here’s my hammock setup on Big Munson island for the Out Island Adventure in December of 2017

THANK YOU!!! This is kind of what I am thinking, but son thinks there will be somewhere to hang a hammock. They have a small crew, 6 boys and 2 adults) so they will be on a relatively small ship.

    THANKS for the input.

From what I’ve seen of that type of ship, nothing above deck is tall enough to hang a hammock, and probably not strong enough either. From what I could tell, everyone sleeps on a backpacking type foam pad or similar on the top deck, not inside the ship

If it is a sailboat, he could consider hanging between the mast and the forestay. He would have to use a CL attached to the forestay by a prusik knot and biner to the hammock.

Our troop sent a crew same size as your sons to the Bahamas outpost summer before last. One of the 2 adults, who weighs in the high 200's, took his hammock and hung it between the mast and forestay- slept in it every night. It might be up to the captain of your boat whether to allow this. P.S. They had a blast!

I recently visited Homosassa and had such a great time there. It's such a beautiful place with plenty of fun things to do. If you're into outdoor activities, one spot I highly recommend checking out is Cedar Breeze RV Park. They have fantastic amenities and it's a perfect spot for camping and exploring the area. I had a blast during my stay there! If you want more information, you can visit their website at cedarbreezervpark.com. So, what about you guys?
