    First post here, be nice...

Hi folks. Those tree hangers at Whiteblaze have got me all kinds of curious, so I ended up here. I'm 46, and have been a backpacker for a few years, a car camper most of my life. I've got to admit, I REALLY want to give this a try. I don't know any hammockers in my area (Southern Oregon). So I don't think I can try before I buy. The closest I've came before is my brother's backyard hammock. But that thing was lights out! I had no idea what was out there for backpacking until the last couple of weeks. But is it really that much better than crawling thru the mud into my tent? As far as the gear I already own, how much of this is usable? A couple of wally world blue pads, a Big Agnes insulated air core, Montbell UL SS #2, no tarp. My girlfriend has mad sewing skills, so a DIY underquilt would be easy. I'd planned on buying a Skeeter Beeter, but I think I'll wait a few months and get a good one from the start. Anyways, I just wanted to introduce myself. I'll be asking alot of questions, and doing even more lurking.

We've got a whole forum full of people here that think so.

All of the pads that you listed can be used in a hammock, and you'll find many members here who do just that. Of course, some hammocks lend themselves better to pad use than others (double layer ones, or ones with pad sleeves). Also, if you have a DIY'er around there is essentially no piece of hammocking gear that you can't make. Tarps, hammocks, quilts, etc..there are plans here on the forum for them all.

Skeeter beeter is a very good hammock if you like it. And many people here do. Grnad Trunk (previously The Travel Hammock) makes a good product. The Warbonnet Blackbird is the rage of choice atm. I personally own a Hennessey and several DIY models. If you can think of a hammock, someone here probably owns or has used one.

I might be too judgmental, but I don't like the idea of a bottom entry (HH). PITA it seems to me....

That Montbell UL SS #2 has a full zipper, right? If so, you can open it up and use as a quilt inside hammock. I got a Western Mountaineering Summerlite bag right before I got into hammocking and I'm still using it as a top quilt cuz it works just fine. Later I bought an underquilt to round out my system.

Many feel the same way... However I have mobility issues for which the HH is ideally suited.

I saw the title of your post and thought, bet he's from Whiteblaze. Don't worry, we're as nice to you here on your 1,000,000th post as we are on your first.

There is no contest with me as to staying dry in a hammock vs a tent - hammocks are dryer. I made the switch after a few faceplants and a rainstorm convinced me my tenting days were over.

Welcome to the club. Oregon is a fine place to hammock. You've found a good place to meet up with hammockers.
