    New Scouter from Ohio

We have been watching and researching information on hanging for about 6 months now. We just went on a backapck trip in Southern Ohio and ran into michigandave. He was more than helpful will solidifying our decisions to hang in the future. We will be trying out our new rigs next weekend with the boys in the woods.

Let us know how it goes. It was the last hike/camp with my scouts that convinced me I was done packing a tent if I didn't need to. I am attending my first hang this weekend. I plan to take what I see and learn and try and get the boys on board with it. I will be interested to hear how yours works out. Are you buying supplies or taking the DIY approach with the boys?
    Thanks

For now, there are three of the adults getting set up. I had found parachute nylon at Jo-Ann Fabrics to make a gather end quilt, but haven't done it yet. Most likely, my son will get that one. If the boys want to make them, they are not hard to do at all. I get paracord and webbing at cost, so that helps keep the supply cost down. But, it will still cost them about $20 each for a hammock. The upside is, they would have made it themselves. I am sure once they see us off the ground, they will all want to do it too. We are going to an outing Next weekend and then plan to hang for the week at camp.

I have heard a lot of mixed reviews regarding paracord. I still use it for tieouts, and as a ridge line for my cheap Walmart blue tarp. I haven't finished my setup yet. I have heard that there is too much give (streching) with paracord. There are several lighter and stronger options available. However I am not that far in the know as to the real names or good vendors for a bulk buy.

Greeting from a fellow Ohio hanger. You mentioned the Boy Scouts. Is your troop planning on going to the Simon Kenton Council Jamboree, Thunderbase, in May 2014? We will be hosting a hammock clinic there.

I can't speak for the other fellow, however my troop is not. I will be leaving my troop due to my wife's work relocation. But I will pass the information along to the other leaders. Maybe they would like to add it to the list of possibilities for next year.

I am a scout leader also. 2 years ago I thought I would try a hammock to save time on cleanup after our monthly camps ( drying out the tents,etc.). In two years time the scouts have went from zero hammocks to ten out of sixteen using hammocks and the other six are planning for when they get theirs. One boy uses his in his room now.

I didn't know anything about it, but it could be a possibilty. If you can send me some information, I will bring it up. Our Troop is making a ton of changes in the right direction and we are always looking for new things to do. You can email me at [email protected].

    Thanks
