Believe me, I know. I spent my whole childhood riding out of sight with a helmet on and ditching it in a bush around the corner... I hate helmets, but when I'm on uneven terrain, by myself it's a no brainer. Seriously, think about it; if you got knocked out in that cold weather you'd wake up (if you're lucky) already hypothermic and likely too far gone to do anything about it... Serious stuff.
As for staying warm, I cut the sleeves off t-shirts and wear them under my helmet when I ride. I pack a few so that when I soak one in sweat I can swap it out to dry. As long as I'm moving they keep me plenty warm in cold weather. If I stop I put a hat on.
I'm 26 and a product of the 'extreme sports age' so believe me it hurts for me to be online chastising people about helmets...
