I have a Thermarest Prolite Pad. I works great just don't get off the pad or you will get a chill. I know that if you are using a pad make sure it has that non slip material. I have heard that if you have a pad that slips to put some silicone on the bottom. I never tried it. Also I have never used a UQ I would love to try one.

I like using a self-inflating pad like the thermarest prolite in warmer weather (mid-40's up to summer temps) ; the pad is lighter than an uq, and just enough insulation to keep the chill off. Plus if I do happen to have to go to ground, I have something to lay on as I complain all night!
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.

This thread is scaring me, I just ordered two under quilts from Arrowhead! I have slept with a thermarest neo air, reflectix covered with a blanket and lastly a good old blue CCF mat and I have to say the CCF worked best for me. My only complaint about the CCF was that the friction between my sweatshirt and the pad made it hard to move around but that is the same thing that made it sit still in the hammock better than the thermarest. I think I chased the thermarest around all night to keep it under my legs.

My only problem is that I need to reduce the weight and bulk of my system so I can pack it on my bike.....with the pad I guess I will always have options to go to ground - but I hope I never spend another night in that bivvy!
