    Hudson River or Mt. Washington?

I bought a Shenandoah UQ a few weeks ago and while it is great for late spring summer and early fall, I need something a little warmer for this time of year. So I'm looking at getting another UQ.

Facts. I don't hike or hang much during winter except for the all inspiring winter hangouts. So maybe 15-20 nights out during the months I would need an UQ. I have a ENO single that I use during the winter and also a WBBB. Temps can get down to around 0, but not often. I was thinking of getting the Hudson and then getting it overstuffed. Any advice or tips. I don't use pads anymore I kind of despise their existence . Reminds me of tents to much.

I did that very thing and it increased my cold weather temp by 15 degrees. I only added an additional 3oz. of down and it made quite a difference. Now all I use is a VB, my HR, and my Snugfit. Good at the Mt Rogers hang..11 degrees there the one night.

My next UQ will be a Mt Washington. I plan to sew loops down each side of it about every foot or so and install similar loops on my netless Hyperlite (thanks Gnome!) and thread shockcord through them. The differential cut on that thing looks like just the ticket.

For the extra money of getting it overstuffed I might as well get a MW though dont you think?

Pan or Smee could ya'll give me a ballpark idea of the inches of loft or temp rating on a Hudson River with 2 ounces overstuff?

    WT,

Good swag would be 15-20*... you will be pushing 3-3.5 in of loft at baffle center but still 2 in at the baffle lines....You might be better advised to spend $10 more and just get an ORM.... easy 10* maybe even zero... from solid 3-3.5 thoughout.

The MW works great, IMO. What is the purpose of the added loops every foot or so plus shock cord?

I have added a Grip Clip on each side at the foot, connected by shockcord. This seems useful to keep the left side foot end closer to the WBBB hammock with less gap, but maybe I wouldn't need it if I was better at adjusting it the right way. I use it on the BMBH to pull the edges a bit tighter to the hammock, but I don't know if this is needed or actually improves anything. It is very warm regardless.

One thing about down in that is has a huge comfort zone. Even though you have too much loft, with down, you will stay more comfortable than with too much synthetic. If I ever order another quilt it will be the Mount Washington. You can use it in much warmer weather too, and then you have what you need. I add the Shanandoah to my underquilt and make a double underquilt when I'm expecting really cold temps.
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.

    WT, et al,

Yes, the JRB Old Rag Mtn quilt can also be used as an under quilt.... In fact all JRB standard size quilts are equipped to function as an under quilt or as a top quilt.
