    Buffalo River

Anyone been around the Buffalo river? Have a friend coming this summer that wants to go down for a 3 day hike/camp. Needing some info for good trails and spots to hang. It'll be his first time out.

Depends on what you plan to do. There are a TON of trees. I did a canoe trip last year and am planning another this year. Last year, did Tyler Bend to the White River. This year, the water looks UP so am planning to go up river.
My small trip report from last year.

Here is a link to water levels and camps. You can click to turn on "trails" also.

I 2nd the trees statement. It's all trees, rocks, hills... Gorgeous. I'm from Jasper, raised on the little Bufallo, but have seen the majority of what the Buffalo area has to offer; link below to some of the trails/sites.

right now would be a great time to check out some of the really cool waterfalls in the area. the indian creek trail is one of my favorite day hikes,

and there is hemmed in hollow (the largest waterfall between the appalachians and the rockies)

    and a bunch of others

kyles landing is a good start point to a bunch of the great shorter and scenic hikes. but where ever you go on the buffalo it should be gorgeous this time of year.

I think it will be late summer before he gets time off to come out. I'm a planner so that's why I asked this early. I think we are looking at 2 nights. Maybe a hike in, camp, hike out, camp close to the car then back home the last day.

Gimpy, Spaceweaseal and I did the BRT in March and it was beautiful. I have a trip report in the TR section. If I was going to hike in/hike out, I'd start at Pruitt and hike in (maybe to Erbie) then hike back out. Here's a link to some information and some maps. If you have specific questions, feel free to post them here, or shoot me a pm.

Tim Ernst's Buffalo River Hiking Trails book is a great guidebook to the trails around the Buffalo. All his books are good.

Late summer could mean pretty blistering heat (was over 100 and humid many days last summer) and low, low water in the river (which mostly stopped flowing at many points last year), though this year has been pretty wet so far. But that time of year there are few -- if any -- waterfalls running.

No worries about finding trees to hang.

Late summer will be interesting. the lower (eastern) river will probably be your best bet for water....but there are about zero trails down there. that link in my first post shows water levels. Around early June, start checking that out to see how the river is running. Or, start planning the trip around packing in water! Also be aware that some of the camp grounds are closed. Meaning, well, you can camp there. But the privy, soda machine, maybe even the water faucet is shut off.

Arkansas. One of the last rivers in USA that was never damed. Yeah, I got a T-shirt that gets a LOT of Comments "Paddle Faster, I hear Banjo Music" on the back and "Buffalo National River, Arkansas" on the front.
Easy to go 48 hours and never see anyone.
