    Hello from Oregon

    Hello, and thank you!

I have been lurking for awhile, soooo much good info here... I stumbled into Shug's videos while looking into camping alternatives after enduring two back surgeries last year and ended up here. I just cannot do the ground thing any longer but sleeping in the car sucks. As a HAM radio operator, I am involved with several marathon and longer races around Mt Hood. This morning I pulled the trigger and ordered a Blackbird. Happy birthday to me!! Our next race is June 1-2. I can't wait.

    Welcome (officially) to the forums.
Plenty of places for hammocking in your area.

So... What does being a HAM operator have to do with marathons? Is this for various checkpoints communicating with other checkpoints?

I did the Hood to Coast relay about 10 years ago.... Now I wonder how I even did that... Lets just say I've tapered off on the running thing.

Thank you- The race organizers rely on the radio operators to provide communication in the event of an emergency. The year before we got involved, the Timothy Lake marathon suffered a fatality from a bee sting along the trail. The paramedics could not be alerted in time. We are positioned along the course at the aid stations. Usually there is no cell coverage along the trail, so we are it. I also do the HTC, again no cell phone coverage out in the boonies. HAMs also help with races is cities- in Boston for example, the cell system became overloaded and failed. Amateur radio was still able to get the messages to where they needed to go.

Thanks for sharing. I knew about the cell coverage issues but didn't realize the race directors had HAM operators there to help. Good to know.
