I'd call it a "canary cord", in reference to historical use of canaries in coal mines.

I never tension my ridge line very tight, might have to switch to subdued 550 cord.

ok so i understand why you would want to put a ridgeline on your hammock, but I like my hammock to be really flat wouldn't a ridgeline no matter what length is going to place some sag in the hammock.

a flat lay doesn't mean there is no sag, and a longer rl doesn't mean you can get flatter.

in a wide end gathered hammock, a flat lay is achieved by having lots of sag so you can lay on the diagonal. the rl makes it easier to hang the hammock with enough sag.
