Definitely replace those slap straps with either ENO Atlas Straps or something purchased from any of our fine HF vendors.
+1 on the cheapo blue tarp from wally world or -for a better selection, more colors and even camo cheap tarps - try Northern equipment, tractor supply, etc. Lots of folks start out with those tarps!
Best way to learn is to just get out there quick and often - it does not matter what type of gear you have as long as it keeps you safe and dry.
Hope you will be seen at one of the Southeast Group hangs soon. I'm only approaching my first HF anniversary this month and can tell you from experience that group hangs are the best and fastest way to learn and try out other types of gear. Folks on this forum are great! They are even better in person.
Welcome!

Welcome to the forum. You will find all you need to know and more browsing this site. My wife is soon to be a new hanger as well. Her hammock is here but she won't know until her birthday which is the 10th. So that's not to far off.
