    Adding beaks to McCat Deluxe

I have a Backwoods DayDreamer 10x12', rectangular, 3/4? Season tarp with lift/tie outs in a lovely shade of navy blue that goes nicely with my blue original Switchback. I use it for the FL hangs when temps get to around 23 degrees. It has a mitten clip system for closing the ends into doors, but I've never tried it.

I wanted something smaller for FL's normal weather and got the McCat Deluxe in black.

I used it at the FL Sherpa hang this weekend and it was a bit skimpy at the sides. The bad news is that my face was getting sprinkled with the rain; the good news it that my hammock is a Switchback and I (with the two Chihuahuas in my arms!) just turned around inside the hammock.

Moving the tarp 3-4 inches might have helped a bit but trying to get placement perfectly increases the fiddle factor. Am looking for ideas and suggestions to increase the coverage of the sides.

My first choice is to see if Brian can do something. I welcome suggestions as to aftermarket beaks or ?? (2QZQ?) DIY is a scary option since I like to use patterns and silnylon is so slippery but won't discount.

Someone suggested selling it and getting a Superfly from Brandon, but I looked at the site and, apart from not liking the color choices, it's too similar to my BWDD tarp.

You might consider a door kit from Wilderness Logics. I haven't tried it personally, but the tadpole doors should be very close to what you are looking for.

I also have some DIY plans for a door kit...if you would be interested in that I can pm them to you.

I've also used my poncho as a beak. You might fiddle with that?

    Tx will check.

I found '09 posts by Grizz Adams with the same problem on a Deluxe. What he calls beaks is not what I imagine. His are doors and it appears that this is what what the finished product is called.

I have the cheaper version of this in blue but this one shows what I am thinking of to mod the Deluxe. It's heavy and short but I wanted to use it over my hammock stand, so inserted a yard or so of fabric in the middle. It's still in the "projects to finish" bin!

This is what I call a beak.

I'll have to dig it out and see if I can make a pattern from it.

On second thought, I probably would need something that tapers to the end so it's staked down.

If you want to make it yourself, I suggest the style of connection (you can add panel pulls to the tarp if needed) used on doors like these...

...combined with the two halves being extended back over the top of the tarp and sewn together like a Grizzbeak.

Or you can permanently sew on a beak to minimize the added fabric. I imagine 2qzq would mod their doors to do this too.

Photos of whatever you come up with please.
