    10x12 tarp?

Hello everyone. New to hammocks, but thinking that that is the way go. I am going to be heading into the tropics. Basically, awhile ago, when I was more north, I spoiled myself with a very pack able 10x12 tarp. I was using a tent at the time, and there was a lot of rain. Wanted plenty of room around tent. Now though, going the hammock route, I was debating whether this size is overkill or not. I mean, on appearance, this thing is huge. Maybe some forseen issues with finding a clearing to even let the thing stretch out...
But maybe actually OK? Why not? Any insight on this sort of thing? I mean the rainy season is coming up so more coverage...

    Re: 10x12 tarp?

My tarp is a 12x10 diy winter tarp, great coverage, maybe overkill for calm weather but I love it . uploadfromtaptalk1367967297611.jpg

LOADS of people use the warbonnet superfly which has the same measurements.

Use what you have and you can always get a different one down the line.

I don't think it's overkill at all. I feel comfortable knowing I can handle unpredictable weather/terrain.

Ditto on the superfly. I love not checking the weather report and heading out knowing I'm covered...

Especially when you know you will be getting a goodly share of rain it makes sense. It might also make sense to toss in something along the line of a Griz beak for the weather end. Depends on how much wind comes with it. I can easily see one corner up in porch mode and one closed in to shelter the sleep spot.
    YMMV

That coverage is fine for a all season tarp. Like previously said, you can get a smaller tarp just for fun, clear sky days/nights later on(then, you'll feel naked)
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

10' x 12' is a great size, think of hanging out under a tiny tarp all day in the rain even if it covers your hammock do you want to lay in it all day? its nice to be able to cook and other stuff under your tarp. thinking about what i just typed my answer is yes I do want to lay in it all day, but its nice to have extra room

I've got the HG cuben fiber Winter Palace, which is roughly the same size as the Superfly. At 8.5 ounces, it's all I need for a four-season tarp. I like knowing that I can handle all weather with one tarp.

I've had smaller and in between tarps... 10x12 is IMO the only way to go. If weight is a worry lose a pound on your body, you can find the balance.
The syntactical nature of reality, the real secret of magic, is that the world is made of words. And if you know the words that the world is made of, you can make of it whatever you wish.
