    USGI Poncho as tarp??

I've got my hammock, suspension, and a bug net so all that's left is a tarp. I do have a fairly new USGI Poncho, is it possible to get good coverage from a set up with this poncho? I'm new to "hanging" so I do appreciate all the expertise from this forum.

According to the Appalachian Hammock page, they run 11' long. My 10'10" Hennessy Explorer Ultralight didn't fit under one. I can't see yours fitting, either.

But...it might be worth a try. Worse comes to worst, you'll have spent the afternoon in an hammock. Never a bad thing.

I have lived under USGI ponchos literally for months, and through some serious rainstorms. It all depends on your comfort zone.

How wet can you and your gear be...and still be comfortable "enough"?

If you are in warm/humid areas like dense Louisiana/Texas forest in the summer, then it shouldn't be a problem. But if you are going to be on the trail for a while, without the ability to at least warm up+dry-out, and with any kind of wind to factor in...well hypothermia is no joke, even in the South.

I'm currently upgrading from USGI ponchos, all very well weather sealed, and in excellent shape, and even with 2-3 buttoned together, in a diamond or square configuration, it's just going to suck in any kind of serious rain.

But you can find them on ebay, or local surplus stores for around 20-30 bucks, go for it. At the worst you have a great poncho and emergency shelter, and the best you have some great "doors" to add to the tarp you eventually upgrade to.
