I'm going to buy a tarp. I am looking at the Kelty 9 or the Bushcraft Outfitters 10X10. Both are around $60. Is one better than the other?

As I walk in the woods........ well......... I feel at peace with the world.
I'd opt for the bigger one, all else being equal.

I like shorter ones. That way you can hang it lower to the hammock/ridgeline for more protection and privacy
My opinion is that you need a tarp with at least an 11' ridge line. I am no expert, but my 11' tarps barely cover the ends of my hammocks and I hate getting wet if it starts to rain.
Well then re-center that thing on it's prussics, and use your poncho to make a Grizbeak on one end.

I have not gotten wet yet, but my point was that hammock under a 10' tarp looks like it would be prone to getting wet in a rain storm. Of course I have no idea what the length of the OP's hammock is, but most are about the same. I recently upgraded my stock tarp to a WL Tadpole and the coverage difference makes me feel much better about being out in the rain. The Tadpole with an 11' ridge line is not much more than the 2 tarps he is looking at.
