Bad packing test run/ quilt help

I'm getting ready to do a 6 day "recharge" on the Appalachian Trail in MD at the end of May. I'm using a WBBB and a ULA Catalyst. My pack weight is good (25-ish pounds, WITH food and water) but my Kelty sleeping bag top quilt and Arrowhead New River underquilt take up more than 1/2 the pack!

I need suggestions for smaller sleeping gear, around $400. I looked at the Jacks R Better Sierra Snivller (Long, I'm 6'01) and the Greylock 3. I carry a sit pad, so a 3/4 length will work.

    I'm open to any suggestions.

PS I may have a new river and kelty for sale soon.... I really like them but they are bulky.

Yeah synthetic doesn't pack down like down does. For sure that would remedy your space limits. I think a $400 budget is doable if you keep your eye out in the for sale section.

If you're deadset on quilts, 400.00 should get you a summer 40+ set. You can get lower with a pad of reflectix if you ever needed.

Or you can get a Ultralite Downmat and a Big Agnes bag or for half the weight a thermarest Haven. Under 40oz for a 4 season setup if you go with that and meets your 400.00 mark.

Tons of options man. Check out the REI outlet too.

That is the quilt combination I use on my explorer ul, and It gets me down to around 25*. Past that I start getting cool/cold. I put both quilts in an event compression sack and attach it to the pad/sleeping bag straps on the bottom of my pack, leaving the inside of the pack free for everything else.

Thanks for the suggestions. There are sooo many options out there, and it's all quality stuff too. Just got back from weighing my pack at the Vet's (They think I'm crazy, but hey...they have a free scale) and I'm at 24 pounds even with EVERYTHING (5 days of food, 2 liters water, clothes) so I'm real happy there, just need to dump bulk.

This is an expensive hobby....but lighter weight is soooo comfortable, and a hammock is a godsend

Ragnall: How much room does that combo take up?

I beleive the compression sack I use is a 20L or 25L. I do not over compress them in since there is no need strapped under the pack. They would get a good bit smaller. Maybe 10-15L. I think by the stuff size they have on their website the Sierra Sniveller alone would be about 7L, the greylock 3 is smaller. Each does come with a JRB compression sack, so if you still wanted them in the pack, and not loose, you could work with 2 small bundles rather than 1 big bundle.

    I hope that helps.

Ended up ordering a Hudson River "active dry" for an under quilt (some extra protection if it rains) and a Shenandoah Long from Jack's R Better. A bit over $400 and will be here in time to test for my trip. Now I have to sell some stuff.....

Or do I like I do...use a compression bag with the UQ and TP in it and strap to underside of pack.
