    Hand Sewn Hammocks?

Well long story short I will not have access to a sewing machine this summer and I really wanted to make myself a hammock. I found some 1.1 ripstop at a price I like. Im 5'8" and about 145lbs so I figure that should be good. Right?

So how many people have hand sewn a hammock? Also, any tips for me if I do it?

I just want to do a simple gathered end, so nothing fancy.

    All help is appreciated!

Tablecloth hammock...no sewing required & price is right. I've never made one, but I'm sure those with experience making them will chime in.

That will be a LOT of time to hand sew a hammock, is there no way for you to gain access to a machine, a family or friend, even a hf member who lives nearby may lend you one for a day or two?

    Paulie, I'll check those out.

Craige, I'll be living on my own in the Outer Banks for work this summer. Just the puppy and myself. I'm going to have a lot of down time. I think this might be a good way to spend rainy evenings or something of the like.

What I want to do with this hammock is simply hem the edges of the ripstop. So while it may be a lot, it will be a good way to spend time and learn.

Check and see there a fabric shops/community college in your area offering sewing classes. You have your final project. Check places that repair vacuums and sewing machines. They will sometimes have some reconditioned sewing machines for sale. Wallyworld sells some cheap sewing machines, probably will not last long but then they are cheap.

You could use the 1.1 ripstop without hemming it. Sear the cut ends in a candle flame and gather. The edges may not ravel. It's worth a try. Use a piece that's a bit longer than you think is necessary.

Well do I have to sew a channel in the ends for the whipping? I suppose if I don't than this project just got way easier...

You can always whip the ends... It makes for a different type of hammock, but still better than sleeping on the ground...

+1 on whipping the ends. No-Sew options exist and will provide a perfectly servicable hammock setup.

No Sir, you do not have to have channels to whip the ends.

Here is a really simple way of whipping the end, I use this method and it is very nice, tight and clean when done.

If you want to check out the tablecloth hammock
    http://www.tableclothsfactory.com/ta...shes-s/132.htm

this is the 60" x 126" tablecloth hammock. If you look in the column on the left it will show 4 different sizes of the crinkle taffeta tablecloths to choose from.

    Hope this helps!!
