    Prince William Forest NP Update

For those of you interested in camping in Prince William Forest NP I was finally able to confirm today that hammocks are now allowed as long as you use 1 1/2" or larger tree straps on trees 6" in diameter or larger. The updated information can be found on page 20 of the parks compendium: http://www.nps.gov/prwi/parkmgmt/upl...an-version.pdf

Note that every where else it says no hammocks are allowed but don't be deterred by that. So long as you follow the rules in the compendium you are legal.

Ahhh man, the AWS on my blackbird is only 1"

Good to hear that they changed the rules though. Is that throughout the park, or just in the backcountry section?

Great news, and timely too. I'm headed there this weekend with the scouts. Just got to remember to bring the ol' Grand Trunk straps.

I know... I have two sets of tree straps and both are 1". I ordered a set of 1 1/2" straps. Seems like all of the places I have seen with restrictions want 1 1/2" as the minimum so it makes sense to get them.

You can use a hammock in Oak Ridge, Turkey Run, and the back country but only within the provided camp sites and there is a limit of two hammocks per site.

I wonder if there is an effect when using 1"? I've never noticed my straps doing any damage. Maybe they'll change this in the future.

I don't have enough experience to really know but I find it hard to believe that 1 1/2" is much better than 1". Regardless, I feel it is fair to err on the side of protecting the trees, just wish I had the right straps on hand. Tried to find some locally today with no success so I have to wait until the ones that I ordered show up on Friday...
