Testing Loctite plastic epoxy on scraps today to see if it will hold. So far so good but will water test it after the recommended cure time of 24 hours.

Test piece submerged in hot water. I've tugged and twisted; it shows no sign of failing.

Well darn, after four hours in water the bond failed.

    Hi Mike,

For as expensive as cuben is, I would recommend using one of the tapes or glues that prior tarp builders have used. 9485pc, 9460, 9472 or Hysol are all fairly easy to work with and make strong bonds.

Yes, thanks, guys, I ordered some 9460 to be here in a couple of days.

That Loctite plastic epoxy failed at two projects. Thought it might be a cheaper break-through solution. Now I'll feel better throwing it in the trash!

    Learning about Irons

Thought that the CF3 would bond better with the 3M 9460 tape if the pieces were flat so hauled out the iron and promptly scorched a reinforcing patch because my old iron has a hot spot even on the lowest setting.

Studied them quite a while at Wal-Mart and came away with a good one -- the Hamilton Beach has a rheostat with settings well below the "synthetic" mark and a Durathon non-stick bottom. It worked very well.

I don't think I would do that. You may be over thinking it Just be sure to apply plenty of pressure along the seam after you join the material.

Thanks, hangnout, but looks like it is working just fine. Here's my pile of reinforcement pieces ironed out, taped, and then ironed again with very low heat:

This is sail material, right, made to catch wind. It's spring in West Texas and so impossible to handle outside. Will have to move into the garage for final assembly with those long edges and seams.
