    Hanging in Zion

Anyone have any experience hanging in zion national park. Are there engough trees to make it worth bringing a hammock? Any gear needed to hang off rock formation?

I'd check up on the park rules. Some parks won't allow for it. I don't know about the national parks. If you're going off rocks, it might even be different rules.

Rock formations can be hung off, but you might check in on a climbing website for anchors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchor_(climbing))

I don't know well enough for proper advice. I know that you can get a climbing chock or the like to lodge in a crack to hang from.

As far as I've been made aware, you can hang in Zions. I used to hike there all the time. The campgrounds have adequate tree coverage and I think you are required to stay in the backcountry spots (if you're doing the West Rim).

Zions is more of a desert. If you do the narrows you will have really good luck. But I think campgrounds have decent tree coverage I am not down south but I do live in utah.
Bacon and Camping makes me happy.

    It worked fine for me

I did a three night hang in Zion earlier this April. I got about 4" of snow up on top. Did the big traverse from the East entrance, but had to return out the same TH. There were a few choice hanging spots. But only an occasional place that would accommodate more than one.

I backpacked in from the West side also where the campsites are assigned along La Verkin creek. Only about 1/3 were good for hanging, and it is slightly confusing as the sites have been renumbered recently. The ones closest to Kolob arch had lots of trees. Also some good hanging campsites with free firewood before entering the park coming from the South West.

So up on top there are plenty of trees in places, but slimmer picking down in the narrow canyons. I would suggest extra long straps for cases where one support can be tied around a rock.

Lots of good advice here. Zions is on my bucket list in the next few years. Good to hear that with a bit of careful planning, hanging should work.

Check the link above go to East rim trail that section has forest at higher elevations hike into canyon like landscape with scattered trees. On the opposite side is the West rim trail. Been in the park without my hammock but noticed plenty of trees also be prepared to ground camp. Summer is busy and hot. Winter lower elevation cold higher elevation snow with plenty of solitude. The Narrows is closed during rainy season due to flash floods so contact the ranger prior to your visit upper section trees lower camping in a slot canyon the trail Virgin river. Both trails get you away from the masses. Lovely park.

Take the hammock. Plenty of trees. I've climbed, camped, hiked. It's one of my favorite places. So many places, so little time.
Pic of the trail going up to Angles Landing. I think that was in June?
The dark formation is AL below me.
