    Permethrin and tarp? NO!

Permethrin and tarp? EDIT Don't do it...read on.

Do you, have you, would you, spray your tarp with Permethrin?

    Does the tarp material matter?
Cuben vs silnylon vs coated/rubberized whatever...

I have a tarp that will be set up for weeks or months at a time and others that are setup for days at a time.

It is amazing the number of bugs that drop in to visit let alone the mosquitos that like to hang out. Then of course the bug eating birds like to visit every morning.

Using a bugnet with the hammock makes it almost a non issue but yesterday's assault, as I went to sneak a nap, was particularly brutal.

I wasn't planning on spraying my tarp but it looks like I will have some P-stuff left in the bottle after coating the hammocks today and thought I might try it on my repurposed Kelty footprint now diamond shaped tarp.

This is just my own personal knowledge I've picked up over the past couple of years, so take it with a grain of salt.

My understanding is that Permethrin has to soak into the threads of the fabric and bond to them as it dries, to be effective.

Because tarps are treated especially to repel liquids and prevent them from soaking in, Permethrin cannot do it either. Thus, it is useless and a waste of good Permethrin to attempt to treat anything waterproof.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. But I figured I would ask because some of the tarp materials are coated but not impregnated and wondered if that mattered. Since they stretch out and gaps are exposed, thought maybe some string 'em real tight and spray them down.

Also, I'm not familiar with the makeup of the CF, too pricey so I have never bothered to even check it out.

I would avoid doing that, for two reasons.

One, as mentioned, it probably won't make a difference; the Permethrin has to soak into the fibers and dry to be effective (otherwise, it doesn't last). The coating (even the DWR on the opposite side of one-side-coated PU tarps) will likely prevent this.

And, two, the solvent for Permethrin is mineral spirits (even in the Sawyer version, per this post. Mineral spirits are also what're recommended for diluting silicone for home-made silnylon treatments (per this thread). So...while it may or may not wind up diluting (and washing off) the silicone from your tarp, why take the chance?

    Re: Permethrin and tarp?

I wonder if permethrin soaked fabric strips hung from either the perimeter or tarp ridgeline would help....

Hey excellent idea JS, I will hang my neckerchiefs recently sprayed with permethrin at either end of the ridgeline or hammock.

Maybe a little sign, "give up hope, all those who enter here..." Emblazoned with a skull and crossed skeeter wings.

A helpful tip which I have found to use, soak a bandanna in the Permethrin. Let it dry for about 2 hours. You can then wrap it around your neck or head and it works great. I have used this method for about two years. I recently got into hammocking and I plan on using the same method including treating my hammock, but I will then take the bandanna and hang from the ridgeline.

I don't get it - if you have a bugnet, is it not doing the job? Did you spray the bugnet with permethrin?

Hanging pieces of permethrin-treated cloth from the ridgeline just doesn't sound very effective, not compared to a bugnet.
