Widow Makers - an eye opener

Last weekend I attended a hammock camping seminar put on by a local outfitter who has been helping us spread the word about the wonders of hammocking. During the demo there was a large crashing sound behind us. We all turn to see a tree that had fallen within feet of us and inches of parked vehicles. The tree was rotten about 20' tall and 6-8" in diameter. Easilly a killer. So keep looking up and NEVER hang your hammock on a tree marked with a RED X.

I learned to never let Caveman distract me while I set up a hammock.
He has been known for pushing trees over on people.

Reminds me of my first night in the BWCA last summer. I learned pretty quickly that the birch, at least in those parts, are notoriously weak trees.

I had just zipped myself in my hammock, to escape the nasty mossies at bedtime, when I started hearing the creaking and cracking of an imminent tree-fall. At that point I could do nothing but wait the few seconds for it to happen, which it did, very close to me. When I surveyed the area the next morning, I saw that the end of the tree trunk had fallen in line with, but about 3-4 feet short of, my hammock.

I thanked the Good Lord that I had been spared, and I was especially wary of suspect birch trees the remainder of the trip. Like Caveman, I found that some of those trees were also easily pushed over.

Just came out of the Eagle Creek area of Fontana Lake here in NC. If you want to see some widow makers you need to go into that area. Dead white pines roughly 200 to 300 foot tall, 6 feet or more around. On the positive side though they do make for a good supply of firewood if your willing to do some work. Beautiful trees though. Absolutely amazing in that area both conifers and hardwoods. Would love to have seen it before the loggers got into that area over 100 years ago.

Better pushed than falling, I say...

it's better that I choose when that sucker is going to fall in my space!
