How big is TOO big?

Hello Fellow hammocks campers,
I am in the market for a new or used Tarp and was wondering what size to get? I think 8 x 10 is the normal size and that would work for me . Do I want to go bigger? Not really worried about the weight but more of the price. I am watching 2 on Ebay both are Equinox and include shipping : 8x10 for 50$ or 10x12 for 60$

That depends on the hammock(s) you use with it. Some hammocks (Claytor, homemade) are long enough that the 10' length won't be enough coverage.

I'd go by the hammock you want to use it with to judge the size of the tarp.

10 x 12 is the way to go for maximum protecton is the tarp silnylon only a few ounces difference in wieght if its sinylonneo

in cold weather a tarp that comes down nearly to the ground to block wind is nice. you can rig the 10x12 to have this and end closure as well. 10' wide is about the min width for having it go down to the ground, so the 8x10 wouldn't do it since it's only 8' wide. 8' wide tarps are a decent 3 season width although many 3 season tarps are closer to 9'wide.

I've used a speer 8x10 with the blackbird. I would say it's fairly adequate coverage UNLESS there is serious wind, or worse, wind-driven rain.

For what it's worth, I just ordered a 10x12 tarp to replace the 8x10. I will probably still use the 8x10 when there's not much rain in the forecast, but if I'm expecting a downpour, my bigger tarps will be the go-to.

I've used smaller ones on my BB, but a 10' ridge will still leave you with more than a foot of extra. The ridgelines on the BBs are (I think) 101". Add a couple of inches for rings or whatever and you've still got some room.

I had a large tarp made especially for my bridge hammocks. Bridges take more tarp to get coverage, so I bought a 13 foot ridgeline with 7 foot sides. This is OK for a brigde but way to larger for, say a BlackBird. Here are some pictures of it with a bridge and a BB,

we'll it's harder to get full side coverage from wind and or windblown fog/drizzle with an 8' tarp, and some may only be concerned about these conditions when it's really cold (winter), but if you left the guylines on the bb unstaked and pitched it super steep and narrow you might get full side protection, but the tarp might touch the hammock as well and if the underside of the tarp is wet from condensation it won't be ideal . if it's just regular rain you're protecting against then it's plenty. i'd say 8' wide tarp is a moderate sized 3 season tarp
