    Hiking into Damascus

My hike started a day late due back pain. I could hardly get out of bed sunday and went to the chiropractor Monday morning. After my appointment i was feeling like myself again so i road the two wheeler up to my uncles in Marion Va. I had planned to meet sweeper and thunderbolt on the trail so Tuesday morning my uncle dropped me off at rt 603 and i started up the first climb of the day i believe it was pine mt. The temp was in the low 30s but clear and beautiful. I was filled with excitement and anticipation to see this section of trail. My pace felt smooth and quick mostly due to the lighter weight gear but I told myself it was because I had been training. I suppose it was both. Anyway I wasn't sure how far ahead sweeper and thunderbolt were although sweeper said they were camping at Thomas Knob. The trail climbed up Pine mt and across Grayson Highlands and up mt Rogers and thats where i met up the the boys as they enjoyed their lunch, I was glad to have caught up with them, that was my first break of the day and it was nice to sit down. So together we climb Mt rogers through the stairs and fat man squeeze to the camp site. What a great spot. After a windy night we set out around eight and headed for white top and buzzard rock ? what a view. After lunch I went out solo and camped at saunders that night. In the morning I hiked into Damascus with a couple of college grads. Very fun Hike and in damascus in camped in the woods in family area. Not to far from Demeter and her group. I had a good time and eat a bunch ( not as much as at the florida hangs ) It was cool running into all the hf folks but saturday morning i packed up to leave after the group picture and was road hiking by 1230. I really have started to enjoy backpacking and to all that gave advice and made equipment for me thanks. I now have a new passion.

    Hiking into Damascus

I'm glad your back problems didn't prevent you from being able to hike in, Chuck. I am also happy to see that you're getting out and enjoying nature from a backpacking perspective. Exercise and fresh air with beautiful scenery is a good mix.

One of these days I'm going to have to make it to trail days! But I can't tolerate traffic and parking nightmares so hiking in sounds like the way to do it.

Take care of that back by keeping your loads light. I'll be seeing you on the trail, Chuck.

Glad you're enjoying things, Chuck! Sounds like a great little hike, and I'm grateful that your new gear and training are working out for you. It's always in the little things you do beforehand...

Way to go Chuck. Great report and great to hear you are out and about. Still thinking about coming to Chattanooga later in the summer for a raft/hike/hang trip with the boy.

    Peace...
