    Diy fail help!

OK, I made 2 hammocks, I started with 1.9 rip stop from JoAnn's and trimmed everything up with a woodburning knife... ended up with two dbl hammocks @130x58. My son's is great mine sucks. I've slept in it twice, both times not great. It has been torn completely apart and re-sewn. I'm constently playing with the ridge line and cannot get any lay.

So here I am. I am 6'1" approximately 315 lbs in a 10'1/2" 58" wide dbl hammock. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to XL 90" wide? Any help would be appreciated...

    SOOOO many variables:

How did you whip the ends? That has an effect on the comfort in a big way.

    Are you laying diagonally?

Make sure the foot end is 10" or so HIGHER than the head end.

SAG: I like a LOT of sag. Your ridgeline should be at MOST 83% of the length of the hammock. (I like a shorter ridgeline!)

A pic of your setup would help, or PM me your number and I'll give you a call...

you forgot to hem! heming is absolutley nessesary.it does not only stop fraying,it is reinforceing the fabric edges and preventing them from ripping.

I hemmed all the way around, 1" rolled hem. Does anyone know how to get a pic from your gallery to this area? I have a pic of the first time i went out. I had to take the ridgeline off to get any lay then.

I put in a 11/2" end channel and ran a line through that... i think it is fronkey that has the vid out that I used.

Not exactly true. The selvedge is pretty strong. I've had unhemmed hammocks. A gathered end hammock's load is distributed along it's length, not sideways... They CAN fail, but it's not common to start on the edges...

So... the trick is to hang about 30-degrees, then tighten up the ridgeline. If it's guitar string tight, you probably have the suspension too tight...

It takes some fiddling to find the sweet spot. Don't give up... Oh, and try laying the opposite way.

Questions: Shoulder squeeze? Does it feel like you're being squished together at the shoulders?

Are these the pics you were wanting on here?

I used the same material for my first DIY. I hated the way it felt whipped, so I undid it and sewed 3" wide channels and ran whoopies through the ends. It had a much better lay. Ultimately, it was just too short and I ended up making a DL tablecloth hammock 90"x11', which I love.

Thanks JBD! If those are the pics, those hammocks are WAAAAY too tight... the suspension lines should be 30-degrees off the horizontal.

Kids sleep anywhere, but us old peoples need some saggy hammocks...

With your supports at 13 feet apart, your tie-outs are 6' up-- your butt should be about 2' off the ground when you sit in the hammock
