    DIY TQ/UQ idea/question

Hi all you master diy'er. I have a question for you to review if you don't mind. I came across an item that with a little modification could possibly be used as an uq or tq. It is a natural down, 550 fill, twin sized comforter weighing 18oz (the outer shell is polyester microfiber). Would you consider using this? Would you sew an outer layer of ripstop? or would you just use as a source of down? Oh forgot to mention that it cost a whopping $20. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks. Hope this photo doesn't turn out to big.

I bought a used queen size. I was planning to salvage the down for a uq but so far have not mustered the courage to attempt the project. I don't know the fill power but it is 100% goose down. I have a queen size bed in my camper and I'm thinking it would be perfect for that.

I had the same thought as you just using it as it was for an underquilt but after seeing others I really like the thin ripstop better. I also think the cotton shell in my case would absorb too much moisture. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for answering Firetruck. I'm not sure how the polyester microfiber will do with moisture, wether it will draw it in or not. I have never used it outside. Thats why i was wondering if a ripstop shell would work or not(besides adding a little weight). The quilt is a bit long so will have to be taken up a bit. But for $16(found a coupon for on top of the sale price) even if I end up using it for a down source I think it was a score.

Looks like a good find. I don't have any DIY advice to offer. I do have a question. Where did you find it?

I wouldn't use it for an uq unless it has baffles. But if you wanted you can do both. Look up the Hudson River convertible uq/tq. This probably won't keep you very warm as an underquilt being that it is 550 and 17ounces. Sounds like a cool project. Good luck. Also I wouldn't worry about moisture ripstop isn't water proof either.
