Is the "ring buckle" suspension dead?

Could someone please post a pic of how you use your rings? I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how to use anything other than a rope of some sort. Thank you all.

The process is the same for buckles or rings. Basically one ring is used to clamp against the other clamping the webbing (not rope) in place between them. It's easy and fast to adjust. Rings though also need a slipped half hitch to lock them in place so the webbing does not slip under load. Some buckles need that as well....but not the ones I use in the video demo.

I never tried rings, buckles, or straps on my suspension. I've converted all my hammocks to whoopies with Dutch Whoopie hooks. No toggle, no fiddle factor, and I like that the suspension is NOT permanently connected to the hammock. I can toss my wet suspension in one bag, and my dry hammock in another.

You're right about the toggle being a drag, which is why I converted to Dutch buckles before converting to whoopie hooks. I never had a whoopie fall off a Dutch buckle.

Not really sure what your point is. If you need to separate the straps and rings, it's as easy as pulling the straps through the rings and storing them separately. Am I missing something?

Some of us like the idea of everything stays together so nothing gets left hanging on a tree at the last camp site. Others like easy apart setups so they can pack their suspension separately.

I'm not sure if you're replying to me or not, but my point is that with either system, you can either leave the suspension attached or remove them pretty easily. Using straps doesn't eliminate the option of storing your suspension separately from the hammock. I personally prefer to leave them attached, but could remove the straps if there were sap on them or if they were soaked. That was why I highlighted that one part of the quoted message.

Absolutely not. My son uses it exclusively. I have two WBBBs, a 1.7 which I take on car-camping trips, and a 1.0 for backpacking. The 1.7 has ring buckles. I'm currently experimenting with a system proposed by Bonepile that he calls the Single Ring Suspension. https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ad.php?t=62266 I've never gone to the whoopie, but I did go with UCR for a while. My only gripe with the constriction systems is that you must accomodate that extra 18 inches between trees. Too many times I found a great pair of trees but were too close. If this Single Ring Suspension doesn't work out for me, I'll be going back to ring buckle on my WBBB 1.0.

I still use rings. I use whoopies too, but I do like rings. And when I'm building hammocks for less initiated, I almost always use buckles. Everybody has worked a belt.

Attached via larkshead on a gathered end, they're all interchangeable in a matter of a minute or so.

Oh, and one kind of cool thing about SMC's is the fit right over the ridge pole on my hammock stands.

Have to admit, I'm still mucking around with my suspension but totally agree that tree straps need packing separately!

Honestly the attachment to the marlin spike seems like the likely place where it will just fall off and thus fail.

To secure my whoopies I tied a small Celtic Bar on each Whoopie end that I can cinch up to the marlin spike hitch.
