What to Buy? Larger Tarp for HH Ultralite Backpacker A-Sym

    Hi All,

I've had a HH Ultralite Backpacker A-Sym for a couple of years and am pretty satisfied with it, but I would like to get a larger tarp for it. On my last trip, I had some problems with wind-blown rain coming under the tarp. Also, with the standard HH tarp, there is very little room to stand underneath to stay dry. I would like something larger, but don't want to totally lose the ultralight weight.

What would be a good tarp to get? I was thinking about a Tadpole, but wonder if anyone else out there uses an HH Ultralite or anything like it and has replaced the tarp.

    Thanks for any info.

The Tadpole doesn't look to be much of an improvement in coverage, other than the fact it's not asym. The ridgeline is 132" compared to 137" on the HH tarp. You could go for the 144" ridgeline on the Tadpole, but that's going to weigh more.

If you're sticking to silnylon, an increase in coverage will inevitably result in an increase in weight. You would have to switch to a cuben fiber tarp to increase coverage without a weight increase, but cuben fiber is expensive.

You could always go the undercover route, but that's a weight increase too.

Silvrsurfr covered it pretty well on weight vs coverage. I have the ultralight, but I use a large strike that huge tarp with it. Either a WL old man winter, or AHE hard rock winter tarp both 144 inch ridge.

Didn't the ultralight backpacker come with a smaller tarp a few years ago? I'm asking to confirm that your 132" ridgeline number is accurate for his particular case.

Kind of irrelevant - whatever the dimensions of his current tarp, he's not satisfied with the coverage. If he wants more coverage, then more coverage = more weight, unless you go cuben.

When I was still using my HH I became fond of the Eno DryFly.

The design of that tarp makes no sense to me - skimpy coverage on the ends where you need it, and a ton of coverage in the middle where you don't. The price is right, but you should get a lot more coverage for 22 ounces of weight, in my opinion. The ENO Profly weighs the same, costs the same, has roughly the same dimensions, but without the bizarre nonsensical cat cuts.

For $50 more and 3 oz. less you can get a silnylon Warbonnet Superfly at 132" x 120 inches. Just saying.

I have an HH UL A-sym and had the same problem with so little coverage from the standard tarp. I went with an OES MacCat Deluxe and found it to be a GREAT improvement.

I see some folks complaining about OES' customer service recently. My experience was exactly the opposite. Make of all that what you will.

I have been thinking as I am only three season to ask Stormcrow for the same thing.... custom cuban, ship him the tarp and add three inches. get it with the new digital green.
