    Thumbs up National Trails day

I put this in Southeast because I got reminded from a hikers forum that is meeting at RRG AT 0900 AT THE GLADIE VISITORS CENTER.

This coming Saturday is "NATIONAL TRAILS DAY" & this would be a GREAT time to give back to the trail of your choice. SO, if you are off & want to help your area of "The Piney Woods" I say check with your club or the land management of your favorite park & go do some trail maintenance!
Sadly, & this is partly why I forgot till now, I must work this weekend so will not be able to help.
I do know that last time I was down there (May 11) they were putting in new stairs in the Auxier Ridge area (by courthouse rock & double arch). Plus some other maintenance. I'm sure there is PLENTY of work to do in EVERY area that we go to, so lend a hand if you can!

I suggest the following items if you go, some may be REQUIRED: EDIT: from their web site "The work performed by the crew is considered construction and OSHA rules apply."
    Hard hat. (OSHA)
    Work Gloves.
    Safety glasses. (OSHA)
    Water for the entire day!!!
Long Pants and sleeves (coveralls?) (I think OSHA, maybe not.)
Work or heavy duty boots (something that will stand up to a log or rock being dropped on your foot, also may be OSHA)
    Lunch & extra water!
    Rain gear?
    Camera?
Shovel? axe? hatchet? pruners? hammer (rough carpenters & / or sledge)? Bow saw? And: I saw a few cordless drills with screwdrivers & drill bits plus a few 5 gallon buckets.

I'd ask before lugging all that stuff there, but I'm pretty sure that hard hats are required because EVERYONE had one on!

The people I saw were members of the Red River Gorge Trail Crew, they have a web site: http://rrgtc.com/
I think I may join, they do maint (except for this next big push) on the 2nd weekend of the month.

I would bet that all of "Our" other favorites have a similar group. The Grayson Highlands have the Friends of Grayson Highlands!

I wish I could join you! Maybe next year.

Yes, it says must register 2 weeks in advance, but there is a contact number, & I would (almost) bet that if you are willing to do the work, they will let you. From the pictures of other events, the meeting place is the Gladie visitors center, but I would call to confirm that & anything else!!!!!

Imagine: spending a day helping to build; a set of stairs, a bridge, water bars, treadway, etc. on one of your favorite trails. The next time you hike ANYWHERE you will KNOW what it takes to keep that trail hikeable!
At RRG they are building TWO staircases. Replacing 2 sets of stairs that desperately need replacing! Trust me, it was a serious safety matter! I bet your favorite area to hike & hang has similar needs.

Yep. Good day! I posted this to the Nashville Backpacker www.meetup.com group last week or so. I plan to be at Radnor Lake State Natural Area on Saturday morning.

Besides, REI sponsors the Radnor event and gives away their free "Volunteer" technical fabric t-shirts, ... for those who need a little self-interest, ... like me. LOL

Truly, a great day and great reminder to give back to the trails we love ... and use. There are thousands of such events this Saturday all over the country.

    It's coming up fast gang!
I'll try to post this earlier next year so we all have more time to prepare. Sorry about that this year!

I may even call in dead at work Sat just to go.

OK, I just found out we have just under a year to prepare for National Trails Day 2014
As it will be on Saturday June 7, 2014!

As I don't have my work schedule for that far in advance, I can't commit, but I have put it in my calendar already.
