Hanging a hammock using a tautline hitch?

Just curious if hammocks like Hennesy and DD that have a cord coming off the hammock can be tied in a different way. I was thinking about running the cord through the loops of a tree strap and then doing a tautline hitch on itself, perhaps using three or four turns around the standing end. I suspect that it may be prone to slipping over time?

Maybe just tie it off at the loops with something non-slipping. . . but releasable.

Back when I started I gave a few things like the taught line and prussic a try. It was not that they slipped over time but that they instantly slipped as I added my weight to the hammock. With enough turns they might start to grip at some point but then there are other options for suspension that grip perfect with out any knots and take less time to set up and make adjustments.

I used a tautline for a few years, back before I got whoopies or rings for my suspension. I had zero problems and zero slippage. If your cord is exceptionally slippery, your results may vary.

Depends on the cordage. I have used some 5mm climbing type rope with a varying hitches which all held fine. The smaller line that is popular here like amsteel and dynaglide will not hold hitches in my experience.

I used a taut line with my hennessy with good results.
Try a mid shipmans knot it works better. Its kind of like the taut line except on the last wrap instead of all the wraps going in the same direction the fourth one goes in the oposite direction giving you a gap in your knot the width of your cordage with the last wrap acting as an anchor.
This gives a greater bend within the knot making it harder to slip with your weight in it,but slides just as well when you get out. Good luck

The midshipman's knot (also known as the rolling hitch) may work as hair bear suggested, but you could also try the icicle hitch. It is known for superior holding with modern "slick" line.

Sept before last, on a trip to the Sawtooths in ID, my friend's son wanted to use a tauhtline hitch on his HH Expedition. We tried to get him to use the HH fig 8 hitch, but he wanted to go that way so we said: go for it. Over several nights, he did just fine. Then again, he didn't weigh very much. But I was surprised it held. I'm sure it varies with the rope.

I use the midshipmans tautline with 3 wraps and it works. You have to dress the knot well to avoid slippage, but once it's set it holds no problem and comes apart easily as well as being adjustable. It can also be used while setting up the hammock, then once hung and adjusted you can use the figure 8 lash for the ultimate security.

All the available hardware is great for hammock suspensions, but there's something to be said for knowing how to hang a hammock without hardware - you never know when that knowledge might come in handy.

That icicle hitch looks interesting - I'll have to try that one! For prussics and kleimheists what strength cordage would be required for safety margins?
Experience is the worst teacher - it presents the exam first and the lesson later. - Unknown
