    UQ and Climashield Questions ?

Ok, been studying on making my own DIY UQ, the information here at HF is astounding as to the quality and quantity!

I am thinking of using a PL and be able to add or take away up two 2 layers of Climashield synthetic similar to the old adjustable layer CS Yeti.

So, I have the new PL and am getting ready to get the Climashield and found four different types at their website with 3 being shown for use with sleeping bags. http://www.climashield.com/outdoorourbrands

Seems like the Climashield-HL would have the best CLO and least weight, that is a guess on my part.

So does anyone know which of the 3, APEX, CL or HL, would work the best?

    Thanks,
    God bless! Brent

Apex is the latest version I believe. I made a combo top and bottom quilt using 5 oz. Apex.
I have used down to 30 degrees stayed toasty as a bottom quilt. Also took it to 25 degrees as a top quilt. I love the stuff easy to work with as a bonus. Hope this helps.

APEX has the best CLO/oz/sq yd rating, meaning that an equivalent weight piece of APEX is going to insulate you more than the other two.

    Hope it helps!

Climashield rocks. I used the XP version 6 years ago to make a bunch of top quilts and they are still keeping os toasty warm. I recently came into aome Climashield Apex (5.0) and it's fantastic. Our troop made several UQ from it and there is more for the next generation of hammock campers in the troop.
Happy Trails to one and all.

    So, MMM

Do you sew the Climashield in around the edges with Bias Tape ?

    Thanks,

    Thanks,
Best thing to do is sew it all inside out...so entering the thread injector: Climashield on top, two layers of ripstop (I used 1.1) underneath; the ripstop should have the good sides facing each other. Although I am hard pressed to tell which side is which half the time.

For channels I used 2 1/2 grosgrain, folded in half and inserted (fold to the inside) between the layers of sil. I used binder clips to hold it all together once I got it lined up and stitched away.

Stitch one short side and both long sides...or both short and one long...then turn the whole thing inside out so the climashield is now on the inside between the sil. then stitch up the last side with your grosgrain between the layers.

You want to take it slow on the sewing and make sure your hands aren't overly dry / chapped. the Apex will stick like crazy.

Sadly the above is a result of my "education" from the first UQ I made...and the version above I made for a friend.

And meant ripstop...although I referenced it as sil at least once in my post.

I would recommend putting the climashield as the lower layer in the stack. It has a tendency to get hung up in the foot otherwise. At least it gets hung up in the foot on my machine.
