Pitching your tarp - for tall folks

I'm 6'4" and have been considering pitching my tarps high enough for me to stand under. Hunching sucks.

Anybody else do this, or am I a crazy person for considering it?

Yes Sir, I do hang mine a high enough to stand under. I am only 6'1 but that hunching over to do everything is for the birds. I did pic up one of the light weight camp stools from Jacks R Better and it works great to sit on under the tarp if I am all sweaty or dirty and havent put on my sleepin clothes yet and works as a great night table as well

I'm 6'1" also. I hate that myself. The only time I need to worry is when there's going to be a storm. Then I hang it low. You're right, though. Hanging it high keeps things from falling into your mouth (if no netting) or keeps creepy crawlies from landing on your hammock. It's also there in case it does come down. You would not believe how many times I woke up with a slug on the tarp. So, you're not crazy.

I am 6'2" and 360 ish and hunching over really really is pushing the laws of gravity for me, so i try to string my ridgline at just ab out my height and with the superfly that gives me about a foot or two from the ground depending on pitch angle, and quite frankly aside from the breeze stealing the heat from my shamu uq, I like it that way...

Same boat but with two more inches and twenty more pounds.

That said, I find myself hanging my hammock higher than most others I know because of the fact that I'm taller. I suppose in the warmer months, a breeze ain't bad. I find myself not so much worrying about the tarp protecting me from breezes as I focus on it keeping me dry if it rains. A foot or two off the ground seems manageable to me.

Gresh, back in my Hennessey days I'd tarp it so I wouldn't have to bend at the waist at all. Why even bend over? We've progressed far beyond groveling with dirt and insects and bowing to kings
Now in the deep winter hikes I still get down with the get down, taking the tarp all the way to the ground; well true if I was still using a tarp
Just remember it aint the amsteel snapping, it aint the tree hugger finally failing, heck it isn't even an errant thread in the hammock body going grapes.....it's the sound of our body meeint Earth in a personal way. So hang as high as you want to. Me, I'm hanging just high enough to keep the sock off the ground!

I'm 6'5", and like others have said it depends. If I know it's going to be cold/rainy, or if I'm at the end of a long hike and plan on setting up and getting in the hammock ASAP I tend to keep it lower. Otherwise I pitch it so I can walk under it.

One thing that does help is to not use a continuous tarp ridge line, but instead use two lines from each of the center tie outs and use highly adjustable lines for the side tie outs. Idea is to set tarp up high, and then stake down side tie outs. When you're ready for slumber, just loosen each side of of the tree lines (Dutch Flyz & Stingerz work well for this), and then tighten the side pull outs. It's easy to maintain a taught pitch this way..

I keep my ridgeline high too. Hammock is also at waist high so fully covered by tarp. My pup carries a 5x7 sil tarp in his pack and if it is windy it gets set up right to the ground on upwind side. He only carries a few ounces but well worth it. Can also do the same with my poncho tarp.

I hate hunching over like dog on a....
