Hello friends,
I ran across Suge's YouTube videos, and got interested in hammocks that way (my kids love his videos, so perhaps he can start his own children's programming!). I was a ground camper 25 years ago, but gave it up (and most of my gear) as life got more complicated. It is fascinating to see how much lighter and more sophisticated the equipment has gotten. I feel like a beginner all over again.
Now I am getting my family through the car camping phase, and we are interested in starting some real backpacking adventures. It looks like hammocks are definitely the direction we will go in to save on weight and set-up/break-down effort. Since my wife sews, we are thinking about going the DIY route, since trying to equip the entire family out of the box is prohibitively expensive. Besides, gear-building looks like a great off-season activity.
Thanks to everyone here who has posted so much information. I'm still trying to understand the different kinds of hammocks and rigging, so all of your information is very helpful.
As a side note, one of the reasons I gave up backpacking/hiking was back problems. Long story short, I stopped wearing shoes about a year ago with some DIY foot exercises, and now my back pain is 90% better. This year, I hiked in King's Canyon in a pair of modified flip-flops with less pain than the rest of the group. For obvious reasons, I need to keep my kit weight down to a minimum.
