    Hot summer days, mosquito nightmare...

Hey guys, this is my first thread starter, and searched for a few days before posting. The last time I went camping, it was hot. Real hot... with no wind. I had my GT Skeeter Beeter set up with a tarp up top, looking really sweet, and inviting. When I went to bed, I tried sleeping in just a pair of shorts to keep cool. the heat wasn't really an issue, but the next day when I got up my back was COVERED in mosquito bites!

So my question is, how do you guys protect your back when sleeping in hot weather? Any and all comments are welcome, I look forward to any feedback. Thanks for everything!

you can use a product call Permenthrin. You can buy it from amazon. Here is a current thread with all the info you might want.

I'm trying to stay away from chemicals... I treated my military gear with Permenthrin or DEET, and I broke out something fierce. I just need to find a way to layer without overheating, and without it bundling up in my sleep space. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

A double layer hammock would prevent that. Or wearing some type of thin shirt. Columbias OmniFreeze shirts are supposedly pretty cool shirts, although I don't know if that only applies if you're exerting yourself.

Not the best solution, but get/make a net that hangs all around the hammock, so your back is protected. (Fronky Style)

Built in bug nets are meant to work with some sort of under-quilt/pad to provide complete protection. If you can't/aren't using one, you leave yourself vulnerable.

Maybe make/buy a cheap non-net hammock to use with it, and save the skeeter beater for spring/fall/winter weather that is cooler.

So glad I saw this post! The thought of being bitten through the bottom of a SKB crossed my mind the other day while hanging for the first time. Now I really need to get the underquilt project in high gear and for another good reason.

For the daytime I guess some lightweight clothes will have to suffice, but for the evenings it is a whole different story in my location.

Don't write off permethrin. To start with, permethrin and DEET are not the same thing. Unless you know for certain which chemical you reacted to, make no assumptions.

Also, military permethrin kits are soak kits, meaning the coverage is total, inside and out. Misting the outside of your hammock and net may well give you the protection you need, without causing an allergic reaction.

We soaked our gear, like stated, and it caused a slight irritation, I mist my camping gear, and have had no issues, maybe you'll have the same luck.

My ENO Guardian hangs down below the hammock for 360 degree protection, you could make a net to do the same, or see if the guardian will fit your hammock.

I use a pad in my Skeeter Beater.........but I'm not in Texas
I'm pursuing the double layer option myself, or a DIY Fronkey bugnet as was mentioned.

I haven't tried it yet, but a Thermacell should work well on the ground next to the hammock. Around here it's mainly just the few hours around dusk when skeeters are really bad.
