    Segmented Pad Extender

I came to the hammock game too late to purchase a Speer SPE, are there DIY step by step instructions for making a highly similar version? Has anyone made one with wings filled with something other than cut-up ccf pads.

This may be a dumb question, but what about down fill or even a synthetic material? Still too much compression? Seems it would help with the bulk factor.

Down would be compressed too much, remember, its not the down fibers that keep you warm, its the trapped air that insulates you. And when you compress down, you squeeze out all that trapped air. Same goes with down alternatives. CCF seems to be the lightest material that you would be able to use while compressing it. As for the SPE, they are ridiculously easy to make. Just take 2 layers sew them into a tube with 2 smaller tubes running parallel to the main one on either side out of ripstop. Just be sure to measure the width of your pad and add a half inch for ease of insertion in the main tube.

You could stuff the wings with spare clothing, assuming you carry enough.

thanks for the responses...hadn't thought about spare clothing though do like the multipurpose option there. Sounds simple enough, but since this is going to be my first attempt at using a thread injector I suspect it will be an adventure.

Definitely, will likely be my first DIY effort and the pics and directions from Jeff are a great starting point. Thanks.
