    unintentional zero hero

During my Wood badge course this past week, my patrol decided to sleep under the stars as a patrol. I had very cheap gear along and was hesitant but willing to give it a try. I was not, however, willing to sleep on the ground. My hammock was in my car and so were a couple of blue wallyworld pads and a poncho.
Thanks to the info picked up here, my old hand tied string hammock took me to -2 F. I had no tarp but we selected a low spot so wind was not a factor.
One 40* bag and an Ozark trail artic bag were all I had for overquilts. Since we headed out at roughly midnight to set up I did not use the poncho as a garlington insulator, but that was definitely a back-up plan. Bailing out was an option too as we were only a couple hundred yards from our quarters.

Thanks to everyone for their willingness to share info and techniques. I was the only one without a stiff back the next morning.

The boys in the troop are going to be drooling over the old farts patch at the next meeting.

Great story! You never would have planned to spend a -2 degF with that equipment, but you made it work!
