    Hammocks in Literature

We have a summer course here called "Reading and Writing in the Woods" - a one week enrichment course for HS kids where we read nature-based literature in nature. For example, we'll read selections of Thoreau, Muir, Berry, etc. in the park next to our campus. It culminates in an overnight hike, mostly likely near Fiery Gizzard this year.

So - that got me thinking. Is anyone aware of any literature suitable for HS English students that feature hammocks in nature?

    a must read

"Cache Lake Country" by John J. Rowlands

He describes making barrel stave hammocks and using Brazilian hammocks, but only briefly. I suggest this book because it's just great writing, and it's about living in the woods. I checked to make sure there was indeed a reference to hammocks (pp. 153-154), but then couldn't put it down until I'd read another 5 pages. This will happen almost anywhere you open the book and start reading.

Thanks WV - I'll look that up. My hope is that such readings might justify some DIY hammocks in the budget

Bound to Belem by the guy in my signature line.
Talks about his experiences in Brazil and how he fell in love with hammocks. I'm really hopeful he'll join us someday, if he hasn't already.

    Just a random, amusing quote:

"Old gobblers have very little flocking instinct, their sex drives have been shelved until the coming spring, they rarely gobble, and a person who concentrates on such droves in the fall has the same thought processes as those persons who make love standing up in hammocks. They want to build as much difficulty into the situation as possible."
