When I got started, I asked around my friends and co-workers to see if they knew anyone with a machine they might want to sell. 2 of them offered me their machines for free. I got an older Baby-lock basic machine that is 100% manual operation. I've used the straight stitch 99% of the time, and zig-zag a bit, even made a few buttonholes since getting it. I made the donor several things since then as repayment.

A new machine can be had at wally world for around $100, Or, if you can go to auctions or garage sales and get a good one for around $40. If buying one at auction, or used, be sure it is reasonably new(ish) and has an owners manual. Zig zag stitch capable is a big plus, since it is a stronger stitch. If you have any questions about needle size or thread, the clerk at any cloth store is willing and friendly help to ask. If you feel self conscious about buying sewing equipment, just remember my old Grandmother's advice to this then 12 yr. old...."If anybody gives you any lip about sewing, just remind them that the best tailors in the world are MEN!" also when buying nylon, look for little squares in the material. That indicates it is rip-stop nylon. Once you see it you'll know what I mean.

It also helps to refer to your sewing machine as your "thread injector".

I have an older Kenmore I got off Craigslist for $25. At first I wanted to take a baseball bat to it.....after lots of patience and practice, I am getting pretty good. Best of luck to you.

I started sewing last summer. It was helpful to have a friend show me how to thread the machine and work the tension (since it was Grandma's machine) and I couldn't find anything online instructions.

I was frustrated at first, but quickly discovered a well cleaned and oiled machine makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
