    Quilt temp ranges

I'm planning on making some down quilts in the near future. I'm thinking 40* and 10* top and bottom quilts. What I'm wondering is how far above the low end of the temp range are things comfortable? Also, can combining a lower temp UQ with a higher rated TQ comfortable at a lower temp? For example would a 40* TQ with a 10* UQ be good at 30-35*.

Things are usually comfortable for 20-30* above the listed temp, depending on the exact setup and how much you can vent. Always easier to add cool air than warmth.

The general consensus is definitely that if you want a warmer piece, do it in the UQ. It depends on if you're a hot, cold or average sleeper, but that combination should do okay for you, especially if you supplement with your jacket or other insulation on top.

I've seen people talking about venting before, but I'm not quite sure what they are referring to. Is is just not tucking your self in so more air exchanges under the insulation?

Yup, just kick the TQ off or leave partially on. For the UQ don't cinch it up tight, leave loose so more air can circulate

I made my quilt sets aiming at a 10* differential. 10/20 ans 30/40. Really its just like home, to hot poke a leg out, or kick the covers off...

I use a 20deg UQ and a 40deg TQ. This winter I was out in nighttime temps in the upper 20's. I was toasty warm every night. I do sleep in a mid-weight merino wool top and bottom with socks and a beenie.
