    Mans best friend

Was wondering how many of you guys take a dog with you when out camping ?
What do you do with your dog while you sleep in your hammock ? My last dog was a Rottie and I ended up ground dwelling for a few years because him and me would be way over the wieght limit of the hammock! I tend to have bigger dogs , which is why I wondered if anyone has successfully managed to sleep with a reasonable sized dog in their hammock and what did you do to stop the claws ripping the bottom ?
Would be good to take my best mate with me .
    Cheers

This has gone around a few times. I haven't gone backpacking with mine yet, but he sleeps under my hammock when napping at home. Here are two threads that I found

    Hanging with your dog

    Hammocking with a dog

PS - the trick to searching for a thread with a short keyword like dog is to go to google and put in your word and hammockforums.net

I put a blanket down inside the hammock when the dogs jump in.
Right now I'm using a Poncho Liner.

I feel better about doing it when I am using a tablecloth hammock because worst case scenario is a $20 or less loss. I am a little more anxious about letting them in the WBBB but it happens anyway.

If you are car camping, it is easy to take the extra thick blanket.
    Backpacking, not so much.

53lb. Pit sleeps very well with me in the hammock, I placed the reflectix on the hammock instead of between layers.

My small dogs sleep right with me in the hammock. Their combined weight is around 20 lbs.

A few things you might want to consider... the smaller an object is, the faster it cools - that's just physics. Even with fur there's a good chance your dog will get cold faster than you when they are not running around. Because of that, you might want to build up from cool to cold and see how much your dog can handle before they get uncomfortable. How tightly they curl up when sleeping is a good indicator of their comfort level. If they are laying on their side or belly, not curled up, or curled up loosely, they are probably pretty comfortable.

I usually have my dogs laying close by and put my hand on them every so often to see if they are shivering. If they are or they appear to be curled up pretty tightly, I put a sleeping bag over them. I bought a cold-weather 20 degree kid-sized bag with poly-fil at WM for that purpose.

Usually, I layer with a small cheap tarp on the bottom, then a layer of Reflectex with the sleeping bag on top. I use a few binder clips to keep all 3 together. If they get cold, I unzip the bag, have them lay down, and then put the top layer of the bag over them. I usually zip it up a bit too. My dogs are 35-40 lbs each and are pretty comfortable down to around 40 degrees with that set up.

I also carry bear spray and my dogs are coyote-savvy, i.e. they come running when they detect one. It's not a good idea to leave your dog alone - tied up or otherwise - because bears and coyotes might decide to eat them.
