    The other half

So this is a problem I have been dealing with for a while. Every time I pick up a new piece of gear I catch so much GRIEF from my better half. She just doesn't understand. Why do you need another sleeping bag? Why do you need another stove? Why do you need another hammock? HOW DO YOU MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND!!!!! All in good fun though, sort of. She is a great wife. I'm starting to think its maybe it me.........nah can't be.

The best way to get her to understand is to get her into the same activities as you. But then you'll be spending twice as much!

Gear addiction is tough to understand by those that don't share the affliction.

I found one of the best ways was to share it with my wife. After she slept in a hammock overnight - with a pad and then an UQ, she's now more supportive of hammocks and UQs. After she went on a long day hike with a fairly heavy pack, she mentioned she won't ask many more questions about why lightweight gear is important...

Well, there's your problem: you don't make them understand, you make them think you deserve it!!

Example of how this works: (of course my girlfriend at the time left me anyways ) "I was wanting to get up early in the AM and cast a line or two but what say we go out to dinner tonight and maybe catch a matinee tomorrow afternoon?" (also helps to say this on a Friday/Saturday night when you know the weather is going to be crappy the next morning so you won't think about fishing while you are eating / watching the movie)

Funny you say that. I bought a hammock of a member here a couple weeks ago to try and get her into the hammock thing. She said she would rather sleep in the t**t. So, we took the tent, I put her in my best sleeping bag and she sleep great. Me, not so much. I'd rather be swing from the trees. But she loved the sleeping bag. Its a $250 bag. I froze all night and told her that's why I buy the things I do. I don't go to the bar. I don't gamble. I enjoy the out doors.

I used to carry a pack that weighed 40+ lbs my girlfriend carried a pack that weighed 35+ lbs. When I made the switch to UL I started helping her get her gear selection down. She really appreciates having a 11 lb base weight and carrying only 16 lbs fully loaded for a 4 day trip.

Now I also made her a DIY tarp, hammock, and underquilt.... but hey I'm just a nice guy who wants her to have as much fun outdoors as I do.

When you order something new just add another one to the order for her. Gets expensive though but works.

HAHAHa! I do the same thing!

Buy each type of item in the same color. Hammocks, Quilts, tarps, backpacks...Then it all starts looking the same after a while...

I wish I could buy all the awesome stuff, but I don't because my non hiker husband has fair point.... How often will you use the new gear? My answer is three to five times a year. Its just not worth spending lots of money on all new stuff all the time. So I save up for things, I research like crazy about new gear and I always always tellmt hubby about my next purchase, why I want it, why I need it and how much it costs. Every couple is different, but I will most likely never get my husband on a trip with me. It is not how he relaxes. But he knows that its how I relax and I need it, so he let's me use up some of my previous vacation time without him. He's a great guy and I respect his stressing about me spending lots of money on gear. I guess what I am trying to say is I can see his perspective on it.
